Retina warning signs that need urgent care
Book a same-day or urgent retina consultation if you notice any of these symptoms, especially if they are new, sudden or affecting one eye more than the other:
- Sudden increase in floaters, black dots, cobwebs or moving shadows
- Flashes of light, especially when they occur with new floaters
- A curtain, veil or shadow moving across part of vision
- Sudden blurred vision, partial vision loss or complete vision loss
- Straight lines appearing wavy, bent or broken
- New central dark spot or missing area in vision
- Diabetes with new vision changes, bleeding-like spots or sudden blur
- Eye injury followed by reduced vision, flashes or floaters
Why these symptoms can be serious
The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It works like the camera sensor of the eye. When the retina is torn, detached, swollen or bleeding, vision can change quickly. Some conditions have a better chance of visual recovery when treated early.
Common retina conditions behind urgent symptoms
Retinal tear or retinal detachment
New flashes, sudden floaters or a curtain-like shadow can be warning signs. Retinal detachment needs urgent examination because the retina can separate further if treatment is delayed.
Diabetic retinopathy
Patients with diabetes may develop retinal bleeding, swelling or abnormal blood vessels. Vision may remain normal until the disease becomes advanced, so yearly retina screening is important even without symptoms.
Macular degeneration or macular edema
Wavy lines, central blur and difficulty reading may point toward macular disease. OCT imaging helps identify swelling, leakage or macular damage.
Retinal vein occlusion and vitreous bleeding
Sudden painless vision loss or dark spots can occur when a retinal blood vessel is blocked or bleeding occurs inside the eye. These symptoms need prompt assessment.
What happens during a retina consultation?
A retina specialist will ask about the onset, duration and pattern of symptoms. The evaluation may include:
- Vision testing and eye pressure measurement
- Dilated retina examination
- Retinal photography for documentation
- OCT scan for macula and retinal swelling
- Ultrasound if bleeding or cataract prevents a clear retina view
- Additional angiography tests when leakage or blood flow issues are suspected
Treatment depends on the diagnosis
